Maine's governor, John Baldacci, has gone from promising not to increase taxes in Maine to not ruling them out. Maine is already the highest-taxed state in the country. Medicaid is eating up state revenues faster than it should, and Baldacci has said any cuts to his new entitlement program, Dirigo Health, are out of the question. So where do we go from here? If Baldacci wants the business tax base in Maine to improve, he'll drop the idea of raising taxes. Maine is unattractive to new businesses for many reasons - high taxes among them. Let's not make a bad situation worse. --------
