AUTHOR: Slublog DATE: 1/15/2004 08:35:00 AM ----- BODY: Whiner Watch - Radley Balko, writing in Fox News, says the best way for Republicans to control federal spending is to vote for Howard Dean. His rationale is that Republicans will likely hold the House and Senate, so they will be more principled on spending - the old "divided government is best" canard. Other than tired cliches, Balko has nothing to offer in the way of an argument. The Republicans in Congress are spending too much money under Bush. They did the same thing under Clinton. The way to control federal spending is not to change the president, but change the Congress - they allocate the money, after all. A second strike against Balko is his absolute focus on fiscal matters as the most important issue facing the country. What about the war on terrorism? Foreign policy is and will always be more important than domestic policy. That Balko has forgotten this shows just how pervasive President Clinton's belief in domestic do-goodism has been. --------
