AUTHOR: Slublog DATE: 1/07/2004 09:02:00 AM ----- BODY: Conservatives for Dean - Jonah Goldberg and Andrew Sullivan both want Howard Dean to be the Democrat nominee for president. Both say that a Bush-Dean contest would provide voters with a stark choice between big-government liberalism and, well, moderate-sized government conservatism. More important, though, is the difference between the two on issues related to national security - Dean would make national security dependent upon international approval, Bush would favor a more unilateral/work with selected allies approach. Sullivan and Goldberg are right - it's time to have a good debate between the right and the left in this country. Too often, the presidential race turns into a battle of the mushy middle, with both candidates saying the same things and equivocating over the important issues. This doesn't look as though it's going to be one of those years. If Dean wins, this could be one of the most important, enlightening and entertaining elections in years, if not decades. --------
